EEA Report on Air Quality in Europe

Karlsruhe, 02.07.2024 (PresseBox) - As we prepare for our October event on the EU Air Quality Guideline, we draw your attention to the latest report from the European Environment Agency. Despite notable improvements, air quality standards in Europe remain unmet. Alarmingly, 96% of urban populations are still exposed to harmful PM2.5 levels. Air pollution is linked to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, with over 300,000 premature deaths annually in the EU. The report also highlights new stricter standards to be implemented by 2030.

The numbers below illustrate the exposure levels of the EU urban population to various pollutants compared to both EU standards and WHO guidelines:

Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5): Less than 1% above EU standards; 96% above WHO guidelines.

Particulate Matter (PM10): 9% above EU standards; 83% above WHO guidelines.

Ozone (O3): 19% above EU standards; 94% above WHO guidelines.

Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2): Less than 1% above EU standards; 88% above WHO guidelines.

Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP): 13% above EU standards; 65% above WHO guidelines.

Sulphur Dioxide (SO2): Less than 1% above both EU standards and WHO guidelines.

Notes:

EU Standards: PM2.5 (25 µg/m³), PM10 (50 µg/m³), O3 (120 µg/m³), NO2 (40 µg/m³), BaP (1ng/m³), SO2 (125 µg/m³).

WHO Guidelines: PM2.5 (5 µg/m³), PM10 (15 µg/m³), O3 (100 µg/m³), NO2 (10 µg/m³), BaP (0.12 ng/m³), SO2 (40 µg/m³).
